What to expect

What to expect once you've got in touch....

  1. Introductory consultation

The counselling process begins with a free 20-minute telephone or online consultation where we can assess your needs and gain a sense of what it will be like working together.

The key to successful counselling is the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist, so it is important to ensure the right fit and that you feel comfortable talking with me. Equally, if I feel that another therapist or agency may suit you better, then I will let you know.

  1. Review and consideration

After the initial consultation, take the time to consider whether you wish to go ahead with the counselling. If you decide to go ahead, then you will be asked to complete a short form and sign to confirm that you agree to the terms and conductions of practice.

The number of sessions is mutually agreed between us, but it is recommended that there are at least six to build trust/ rapport and to help establish the ‘therapeutic alliance’. I offer both short term counselling, which is usually focused on a specific issue, or longer-term counselling which is more open ended and focused on deeper issues.

  1. Counselling sessions

Therapy appointments normally take place weekly at an agreed day and time and last 50 minutes. I offer online, telephone and in person counselling (in Cumnor, Oxfordshire). For telephone and online sessions, it is important that you ensure you join the session from a quiet and private environment, where you feel comfortable talking.

Counselling allows the opportunity to talk freely in a safe and non-judgemental space. Sometimes clients also like to bring objects, photos, artwork, music or dreams to the sessions too. There’s no right way or wrong way of doing therapy – you may come along with a specific issue or topic in mind which you would like to discuss, or you may prefer for your thoughts and feelings to emerge spontaneously.

  1. Ending the therapy

Whether short-term or longer term counselling, it is important that we have a proper ending to the therapy to effectively conclude and summarise our work together. As such, at least two-week’s notice should be given by either party in advance of ending the sessions.
